How long should a Tron energy rental last?
Short answer
For one USDT transfer, rent 15 minutes or 1 hour. Rent 1 day or 3 days only when that same address will send again while the energy is still there. A longer Tron energy rental usually costs more in total, but not always: suppliers price each duration separately, and a 1-hour offer is sometimes cheaper than 15 minutes. Check the live table. Whatever you have not spent at the end is gone. The size stays 65,000 or 131,000 per transfer. Duration does not change how much one transfer eats.
It is a clock, not a coupon
The easy mistake is to buy the longest rental because it sounds safer than fifteen minutes. Safer against what? The energy arrives in seconds either way. Three days means you paid for energy to sit on the address through nights when nothing goes out.
Fifteen minutes is the right buy when the wallet is already open and the address is pasted. An hour is the same idea with room to find the address, pass a hardware prompt, or notice you copied the wrong one. Both are one shot. You spend the energy on the transfer in front of you, and then the rental ends.
A day or three makes sense when the address is a payout wallet and tomorrow looks like today. The energy refills while the rental is alive, so you are paying to keep a daily allowance in place, not to stack three transfers' worth of energy at once. If tomorrow might be quiet, the hour is the cheaper regret. Staking instead of renting is the other way to keep a daily allowance, and it locks TRX rather than spending it.
For energy, gasrent sells those four durations and not a fifth. Bandwidth has its own set (5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days and 7 days); 7 days exists only for bandwidth. Rent TRON bandwidth. Ask for 15 minutes and you may find that the only live offers are for an hour. You can insist, and get no price, or you can allow a longer fill when it still costs less than burning the energy yourself.
What comes back during the rental, and what does not
Energy you have used refills in a straight line over 24 hours, at a rate of the whole limit per day, and only while the delegation is still there. On a limit of 64,285, which is what a transfer to an existing USDT balance spends:
- 15 minutes puts back about 669 energy
- 1 hour puts back about 2,678
Neither is another USDT transfer. The same window on 130,285, the empty-balance cost, puts back about 1,357 and about 5,428. Still one pass. A short rental is a single use of the limit. How many transfers fit in the order starts from that, not from the hope that an hour will stretch.
Leave the same 64,285 in place for a day and you can spend it again late in the day, after it has recovered. You cannot spend it twice at 9:00. Three days extend that daily rate. They do not multiply the limit. Three days at 64,285 is on the order of three sends, spaced out, not one send that costs 193,000.
65,000 for 15 minutes and 65,000 for 3 days are the same size of limit. The chain still consumes 64,285 or 130,285 per transfer. The extra 715 in the round order is slack against a slightly heavier call. It is not a second transfer hiding in the order.
The duration strings are 15m, 1h, 1d, and 3d. Leave exact_duration off and a longer duration may come back. A shorter one will not. That longer fill is dropped if its energy price, before any activation fee, is above what the network would burn for the energy you asked for. Turn the flag on and only the duration you named is allowed. If nobody is selling it, there is no quote, which is a better result than a longer rental you did not want. Sellers who only have fixed sizes are the other way an order comes back different from what you typed, and that rule is separate.
