What gasrent does automatically for your wallet, and why

Short answer

If you approve the permission that includes voting, gasrent votes your staked TRX for witnesses automatically and keeps those votes reasonable over time. You do not choose witnesses and you do not sign each vote. The reward stays in your wallet and you take it with one button. You can switch automatic voting off at any time.

Why we do this at all

Staked TRX that does not vote earns nothing on the voting side. Doing it by hand is tedious and easy to forget:

  • Someone has to pick witnesses and compare yields. Yields change every day.
  • Votes have to be placed again whenever a witness drops out or changes its terms.
  • Each change is a transaction with a small bandwidth cost, so a change that earns pennies is not worth making.

We have a wallet signature already, because lending energy needs one. Voting is a natural addition and it makes your stake earn in two ways at the same time. It is also a reason to keep the wallet connected.

What happens, step by step

  1. You connect the wallet and approve the permission. If your wallet has the older permission, which covers energy only, the Supply page offers Enable voting and rewards. That update costs a 100 TRX network fee, once.
  2. Within about ten minutes we read the wallet, see its voting power, and place the first votes on the best three witnesses. Votes are split evenly.
  3. Every day we read the wallet again. We act at once if something is broken. We move votes for a better yield only when it is worth it, and at most once a week.
  4. Rewards build up on the network side. The Supply page shows what is waiting. When you want it, press Claim to my wallet.

When we vote at once

  • The wallet has no votes yet.
  • Part of the voting power is not used, for example after you staked more.
  • A witness the wallet voted for has dropped out of the table or fell too far down.

When we wait

If the votes are fine and a better set only gains a little, we leave them. A new set has to be better by a clear margin, and the gain has to pay for the transaction. If the wallet has spare bandwidth, the transaction costs nothing, so a smaller gain is enough. At most one such change per week. The rules are spelled out in How gasrent picks witnesses and decides when to change your votes.

What the permission lets us do

The permission is an extra active permission on your wallet, named gasrent. It allows:

  • delegate energy and take it back,
  • vote for witnesses,
  • start a reward withdrawal.

It does not allow us to send TRX or USDT. A reward withdrawal can only go to your own wallet, because the network does not let the caller name another receiver. Your owner key stays yours and the permission can be removed in your wallet at any time. Remove it only after all rentals are back.

What stays with you

  • Claiming. We do not claim for you. Press the button when you like, or use TronLink or Tronscan.
  • Bandwidth. Votes and withdrawals use the bandwidth of your wallet. If you stake for bandwidth, or let the free daily amount renew, they cost nothing. If not, the network burns a small amount of TRX.
  • Your own votes. If you vote yourself in TronLink while automatic voting is on, we will replace your list at the next change, because a vote always replaces the previous list as a whole. If you want to pick witnesses yourself, press Stop automatic voting first.

Stopping and what happens then

Press Stop automatic voting on the Supply page. We stop placing votes for that wallet. Votes already on the network stay until you change them yourself. Rewards keep arriving as long as they stay.

Removing the permission also stops everything, including energy lending.

Where the money goes

IncomeWhere it lands
Energy rentalsYour gasrent balance, when each rental ends
Voting rewardYour own wallet, after you claim it

The voting reward does not change your gasrent balance. It shows in the Supply page and in the reward history under Reward withdrawals.

About estimates

Every yield number on that page is an estimate based on the numbers the network publishes. It is not a promise or a guaranteed rate.
