Two ways to earn on staked TRX: lend energy and vote
Short answer
TRX you staked for energy can earn in two separate ways at the same time.
- Energy rentals. Renters pay TRX to borrow your energy for a fixed time. The TRX is added to your gasrent balance when the energy is back.
- Voting rewards. Staked TRX is also voting power. If it votes for witnesses, the network pays a reward to the wallet. This is paid by the network, not by renters.
Lending energy does not take your voting power away. Both income streams run on the same stake. gasrent handles the voting part for you automatically, and you only press one button now and then to take the reward.
Way 1: lend energy
You stake TRX for energy in your own wallet. You give gasrent one narrow permission. When someone rents energy, we delegate part of yours to them, and when the rental ends we take it back. You see every rental on the Rentals page, with size, period, address and price.
What decides the income here:
- Demand. Rentals come only while people want energy. Nobody can promise how much that is.
- Free energy. Only energy you have not delegated elsewhere can be lent. The Supply page shows how much is free.
- Pause. Pause stops new rentals. Energy already out still comes back and you are still paid.
This income goes to your gasrent balance, in TRX, when each rental is finished. See Seven steps to earn by lending Tron energy for the setup.
Way 2: vote with the same stake
Every TRX you stake for energy or bandwidth gives one unit of TRON Power. TRON Power is what votes for witnesses (Super Representatives and their partners). A wallet that does not vote earns nothing from this. A wallet that votes is paid a share of the block rewards that the network sets aside for voters.
Two things matter in practice:
- Delegating energy to a renter does not remove your TRON Power. The same TRX can sit in a rental and vote at the same time.
- The reward is credited on the network side and lands in your own wallet when you withdraw it. It never goes to your gasrent balance. The network allows one withdrawal per 24 hours.
How the reward is built is explained in How Tron voting rewards work. What gasrent does for you is in What gasrent does automatically for your wallet, and why.
The two incomes side by side
| Energy rentals | Voting rewards | |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays | Renters | The network |
| Where it lands | Your gasrent balance | Your own wallet |
| Depends on | Demand for energy, price, free energy | Which witnesses you vote for, network totals |
| When | When each rental ends | You withdraw once per 24 hours |
| What we do | Delegate and take back | Vote and re-vote |
| What you do | Keep energy free, stay connected | Press Claim to my wallet |
What is not on offer here
- gasrent lends energy only. Bandwidth you stake is not lent here, though it still counts as voting power.
- Nothing here is a fixed rate. The yield shown on the Supply page is an estimate computed from the current network numbers. It moves every day.
- Staking itself has network rules, including a waiting period when you unstake. Read them in your wallet before you stake a large amount.
A sensible order
- Stake TRX for energy and connect the wallet.
- Approve the gasrent permission. Use the version that includes voting.
- Leave automatic voting on.
- Check Supply now and then, and press Claim to my wallet when a reward is waiting.
